Extreme Thursday: Sorrowseed

Time for another Extreme Thursday with vocals to set your soul on edge and riffs to make your ears fall off. This week's installment is Sorrowseed, from Boston MA. They deal in what they only describe as "extreme metal". Exactly the sort of thing we're looking for!

In fact, the band's sound is like a combination of melodic death and black metal, with Lilith Astaroth providing all vocals, and Morte McAdaver providing lyrics and guitar. The band formed in 2009 with Lilith and Morte, and have had a varied selection of other musicians involved. It's not easy to piece together the timeline, but by the time the first double-disc album, The Exinction Prophecies, was released in 2011 they had been joined by numerous (and various) members.

Scythia new album release: Of Conquest - February 2014

Scythia are a progressive metal band from Canada who incorporate folklore and legends within their music. With 4 albums under their belts and an ever increasing band of supporters from around the world, Scythia are definitely a band I would like to see hitting the UK shores soon. Their music is filled with epic stories, detailed narratives and grand tales. Their album art is deep and immersing.

Of Conquest is due to be released on 25th February. The band have released 3 tracks on their Bandcamp page which give you an idea of the scale and epicness this new album will have.

Bandcamp Series: Noctura - Surrender The Sun (2011)

Noctura are an American rock band from Indianapolis. They released their crowdfunded debut album Surrender The Sun, in 2011. The album is full of catchy guitar riffs and the female vocals, performed by Mandy Suiter, are incredibly enchanting.

Included on the album is a beautiful cover of The Offsprings, Gone Away. A moving and emotional song originally, Noctura have made the song even more haunting.  I am particularly taken with the album art which was created by Cathryn Hahn.

Extreme Thursday: Astarte

Our brand new Extreme Thursday feature starts with a fantastic band that encapsulates everything Femetalism is about; the all-female black metal outfit Astarte. Hailing from Greece and active since 1995, they have a healthy five albums under their belt (plus an extra one under their previous name, Lloth.)

The band have had three distinct "phases" of their evolution with lineup changes between them. In fact, the only founding member left is Tristessa (Maria Kolokouri), who started out on guitar, bass and keyboard and has since taken up vocal duties.

Introducing: Extreme Thursday

Thursdays. I never did get the hang of Thursdays. Not quite Friday, but late enough in the week that you're already sick of it. There's only one way to improve a miserable day like this; extreme metal!

Introducing a new series to Femetalism: Extreme Thursday. While many associate female metal musicians and singers with symphonic, gothic or folk metal only, there are loads more kicking ass in the extreme subgenres. From death to thrash, doom to black, there are plenty of bands out there showcasing a huge variety of female talent. In this weekly foray into the deeper, darker, altogether more terrifying end of the metal spectrum I hope to showcase some great artists and albums.

From the incredibly famous to the totally obscure, I hope to find a good range that covers all bases. I'm sure we'll see the mighty Angela Gossow or Somi Arian make an appearance, but also many others who you may not know. In fact, I fully expect that I don't know them yet, but as soon as I do, I'll be sure to let you all know!

Stay tuned. Stay metal.

Bandcamp Series: Edenian - Winter Shades (2012)

Edenian was formed in 2010 in Kharkov, Ukraine and is currently made up of Max ‘External Tom’ Molodtsov and Valery Chudentsova. They cite their influences to be artists such as Draconian, Swallow The Sun and Sirenia and those influences are clear on this album.

This album is mesmerising with atmospheric keyboards, intricate guitars and pounding drum beats. My favourite tracks include Winter Shades and The Field Where I Died, both of which make use of the Beauty and the Beast vocals to full effect and both instill a sense of sadness and loneliness in me.

Bandcamp Series: Solsticio - Lost Souls (2012)

Released in 2012, Lost Souls is the first album from Argentine heavy metal band Solsticio.

Combining Gothic Metal with Argentina’s Tango, this album offers a fabulous mix of both the distinctive tango music and haunting gothic vocals with a metal undertone.  The album delivers with every song, truly beautiful and original.

Favourite tracks for me are Fairy Tale, which starts almost dreamlike but then continues into a multitude of dark and uplifting beats that completely draw you in and Free which has a symphonic style throughout along with a stampede of drums and guitar riffs.
