Femetalism appears on The Will and Thunder Show!

For reasons not even I can fathom I accepted an invitation to appear on The Will and Thunder Show recently.  The feature was about women in metal and my co-guest was Christiana Skÿe from

I am much better with written words than spoken, but I thought it was something I needed to be a part of.

Avant Garde Thursday: Narrow House

Bloodstock came, and Bloodstock went, and while we at Femetalism are thoroughly bathed in the metal atmosphere it brings, we did neglect a few things. I know Thursdays can suck without metal to lift the spirits, and leaving you high and dry was a terrible thing to do, so this week we're back with a bit of funeral doom to sort out the doldrums. Or are we?

Funeral doom in itself is all well and good, but we like something a bit more unusual. This week I've managed to find a band who encapsulate all the best bits of funeral doom while also being completely off the wall. If there were a jazz version of doom metal, Narrow House would be it.

Formed in Kiev in 2008 under the name Funestum, they proclaim to be the Ukraine's first ever funeral doom band featuring five musicians and a handful of songs about solitude, death and self-destruction. Unfortunately over half the band left after only a year and Funestum was no more.

Northern Oak Release New Song ‘Nerthus’ & Lyric Video

Northern Oak, Sheffield's very own progressive folk metallers, have today released a lyric video for Nerthus, which gives us a first taste of their much anticipated album Of Roots And Flesh.

Nerthus is a song that describes the worship ritual for an ancient pagan goddess of the same name.
Guitarist Chris Mole elaborates: “A statue of the goddess would be carted around the island where she was worshipped to receive offerings from her followers. The statue would be taken to a sacred pool to be cleansed by a group of slaves, who would then be slaughtered, as touching the goddess and looking upon her face was considered too divine for mortals to survive. Martin’s lyrics tell the story of one slave who willingly offers himself up for this duty, seeing it as an honour and a way to atone for the worthlessness of his former life.”
