Kalidia is an Italian melodic power band who formed in 2010. Their debut album Lies’ Device was released on 27th June, 2014 and featured on the site recently.
Lead vocalist and one of the founding members, Nicoletta Rosellini recently took some time to answer some questions about the band, their influences, the album release and what the metal music scene is like in Italy.
How did Kalidia get together?Kalidia was born in late 2010 with an idea of me (Nicoletta, vocals), Federico (guitars) and Nicola
(keyboards); we all came from a previous power metal cover band project. With the input of
Roberto (bass) we soon started to record our first EP 'Dance of the Four Winds' (2012). Gabriele,
our new drummer, joined us only in January, but he truly brought new energies and he is
completely part of the family.
Where did the name Kalidia come from?Kalidia is a fantasy name, formed by the union of Goddess Kalì and the ancient land of Lidia; this name was an idea of Federico and we truly liked it!
How would you describe your sound? We are a melodic power metal band, but there are so many kind of music in our first album: hard-rock, prog and symphonic. That's the result of our different musical background.
You recently released your album Lies’ Device. Can you tell us about the album?'Lies' Device' is our debut album, self-released on June 27th; the artwork (created by Acchiappasogni Arts) and the title were inspired by the title track song. 'Lies' Device' explores the Pirandello's mask theme: in our reality, everyone is forced to wear a mask and be what the society wanted.
This is not a concept album and the lyrical themes are very different, from mythology (Harbinger of Serenity, Winged Lords) to TV-series (Dollhouse, Hiding from the Sun). Most of the songs were written by Federico and arranged all together during the composing process; we recorded our album at Eden Studios (Italy) and it was produced by Alessio Lucatti (Vision Divine, Etherna).
You have also recently recorded your first video. Can you tell us about the video and how you found the process? It was pure fun! Even if we have some problems (playing on playback was not so easy as we thought), we really enjoyed the day. We chose to record it in a beautiful marble's quarry near our hometown. The video will be released at the end of this month.
What motivates you to make music? We share the same passion; also we are receiving an extremely good response from fans all over the world. It's incredible when your music inspires someone else life.
Which artists have influenced you?Well, we all have a different background; personally, I'm influenced by power metal bands like Kamelot, HammerFall, Rhapsody of Fire, Sonata Arctica. Federico shares the same passion for power metal plus he also like prog (Dream Theatre, Symphony X, Seventh Wonder).
Nicola likes each and every kind of music, while Roberto comes from Hard-glam rock. Gabriele also like power metal and death metal.
Playing your own songs during a live show, give you some pure energy. When you realized you're living your dream, you'll enjoy every second on the stage.
What do you enjoy most about playing live and which Kalidia song do you most enjoy playing?
We usually open every show playing our first song “The Lost Mariner” because it shows all of our shades: melodic, powerful and catchy.
If anything was possible, who would you most like to tour with and why?Not an easy task! I choose HammerFall. We started our career playing some covers of them and they're one of my favourite bands.
Inspired by a recent guest article on Femetalism, I am interested in finding out more about the metal scene in other countries. Can you tell us about the metal scene in Italy?Well, in Italy, we have a LOT of very good bands, trying to emerge from the underground. On the other hand, I must admit our country is not really interested in new bands. It's not unusual to find just a few attenders at worthy local underground concerts; the consequence is that live pubs have lost any interest in metal music. It's really hard for an underground band to have the chance to play.
So what is next for Kalidia?Well, our album has been released only 2 months ago and we are still working on some web and press promotion; we've also started working on new songs.
There will be some great new for December, but that's all I can say right now! So, stay tuned on
our social pages!
Thank you so much for the interview!
Thank you Nicoletta for taking time out to speak to Femetalism. We are really looking forward to seeing the new video and of course cannot wait to hear about the great news for December!Follow the band on:
