Romantic Rebel release debut album - April 2014

Formed in 2012 by brother and sister Alex Vincent and KT Paige in Chicago Romantic Rebel have been rocking out, writing and touring ever since.  They cite influences such as Van Halen and Aerosmith and released a 4 track demo in 2012 .  The band were noticed quickly thanks to some savvy social media skills and electrifying live performances.  Because of this they have had the opportunity to work with a number of influential people in the music industry.

The band were signed to Pavement in 2013 and they went in the studio in Los Angeles with producer Ulrich Wild (ROb Zombie, SOiL, Static-X).  Their self-titled debut album hits the shelves tomorrow and promises to bring a riot of traditional female fronted hard rock.

Festival Preview: Dames of Darkness, The Robin2, Bilston, Wolverhampton - Saturday 10th May 2014

On May 10th 2014, we will make our way from sunny Sheffield to Bilston, near Wolverhampton for the Dames of Darkness Festival.  Dames of Darkness is an annual one day festival hosted by Apparition, a female-fronted gothic metal band from Stafford.

Last year Delain headlined the event along with bands such as Visions of Atlantis, Ex Libris and Azylya.  This year Stream of Passion and Xandria headline. The festival will also include the hosts, Apparition along with ex-Visions of Atlantis vocalist Maxi Nil's new band - Jaded Star, Belgium gothic metallers Skeptical Minds, Sheffield's own Dyonisis, symphonic metallers Divided We Fall and melodic metallers Incarnadine Coven.

For the second year running the festival will be held at The Robin 2, a 700 capacity live music venue in deepest darkest Bilston, Wolverhampton.  The Robin 2 is host to numerous gigs throughout the year and is looking forward to hosting bands such as Mostly Autumn, Nile and Imperia to name but a few.

So what do we know about the bands playing in the Dames of Darkness line-up?

Pagan Metal band Arkona to release Yav - May 2014

Don't panic!  Extreme Thursday might still be sunning itself on holiday but never fear.  In it's place I bring you Arkona, a Russian Pagan Metal band formed in 2002.  Their lyrics are influenced by Russian folklore and Slavic mythology, and they use several traditional Russian musical instruments in their music. Combining metal riffs, pounding drums and folk melodies the band have a unique sound, topped off by lead signer Maria Arkhipova's impressive death growl.

Yav is their 7th studio album and is due to be released in the UK on 5th May 2014.

Xandria - New album, New vocalist - May 2014

Xandria are set to release their sixth album in May 2014, following the success of their 2012 album Neverworld's End. In October 2013 vocalist Manuela Kraller left the band to pursue a different career after just one album release.  Xandria have filled the vacant vocal spot with the huge talent that is Dianne van Giersbergen.  Dianne also fronts Dutch progressive metal band Ex Libris.

On listening to the preview it sounds as though the new album, Sacrificium, will follow the musical journey started with Neverworld's End.

Extreme Thursday returns in 2 week time ...

Have you been keeping up with the Extreme Thursday specials each week?  We have had lots of positive feedback and are really glad that you have been enjoying them.

Craig has been enjoying putting them together for Femetalism, but because of the Easter holiday here in the UK, he is going to be taking a short break. Don't worry though, Extreme Thursday will be back melting your faces in 2 weeks time.

Within Temptation & Delain @ O2 Apollo, Manchester

On Friday evening, we dashed home from work, jumped into the car and drove across the Pennines towards Manchester.  We were off to see Within Temptation supported by Delain.

Once we were safely parked up and after a long queue around the building we made our way into the venue.  The O2 Apollo is a great venue.  It has a sloping floor, great acoustics, three bars and easy access to toilets.  We didn't have long to wait once we were inside as Delain burst onto the stage at 8pm for a (shorter than I would have liked) 40 minute set.  The place was already packed, demonstrating how popular both the main act and the support were and we were quite a way back.

Extreme Thursday - Vastum

Thursday is once again upon us. This week's installment of Extreme Thursday looks at a different sort of extreme metal. The themes of brutal death metal are rooted deep in the taboos of society. Violence, blood and guts are staples of the genre, with demonic references or anti-religious rhetoric thrown in. But one band in particular takes on another sort of uncomfortable subject.

The use of horrific elements has become less shocking over the years. Much of it has become mainstream, with even the most mundane police drama featuring hideously disfigured corspes. Lyrical depictions are seldom more shocking than a B movie horror or a low budget slasher flick. Much of death metal's staple horror, when stripped of the guttural roars and chugging guitars, can end up looking a bit silly.

But another sort of taboo, another sort of uncomfortable reality has grown alongside. One that has always been there, but has become more prominent in recent years as society grows and fights with itself. The subject of human sexuality.

Edenian cover Kylie Minogue's Confide in Me

Edenian, who's album Winter Shades we featured recently in a Bandcamp Series post, have just released this cover of Confide in Me by Kylie Minogue.  I love the original, so to have the song be given a metal overhaul is great!

Have a listen and let me know what you think:

First crowdfunded album release for Stream of Passion - April 2014

In 2012, Dutch progressive, symphonic metal band Stream of Passion made the decision to leave their record company Napalm Records and become an independent band.

Citing differences in their ideas as the main reason for the decision, they went on to launch an incredibly successful Indiegogo campaign to record their fourth studio album, smashing their €25,000 target by almost double.  Bass player Johan van Stratum said:  "Times are changing, and so is the production of music and the way it is consumed. By taking things in their own hands, bands have more freedom and fans are enabled to support their favourites directly."

Van Canto @ The Underworld, Camden

Spending 8 hours+ on a coach isn't my usual idea of a good time, but on Wednesday 2nd April 2014 I made the exception and headed from Sheffield down to London and back again to see Van Canto on their only UK date of their Dawn of the Brave tour.

Although I knew The Underworld was a small venue, I don't think I expected it to be quite so cosy! We found a nice spot near the front and watched as the room filled rapidly.  The atmosphere was immense; friendly and incredibly excitable. The stage was small and over flowing with drum equipment. There really wasn't a lot of room for any excessive moving about, that's for sure, but I loved the intimacy of it all!

Extreme Thursday: Persian Metal Special

This week's Extreme Thursday is doing things a little differently. Rather than commiserate all that is dismal and terrible about a day of the week, we will instead be turning our eyes toward a more Persian influence.

With two very different stories, the bands Mortad and Master Of Persia have very different origins, aims and reasons for being. With only a single album each so far (although more on that front later), these two bands are relative newcomers to the metal scene, but have a great deal to say.

Have a read, have a listen, support the bands. In the west we are fortunate to be able to enjoy the music we love however and whenever we want. But little is more extreme than focussing your whole life, or even losing your whole life, for the sake of the music, the message and the meaning you have defined for yourself.
