INTERVIEW: Winter Storm

Winter Storm are a five piece Dark Melodic Metal band hailing from the West Midlands of the UK, they were recently announced as playing Valkyrian Festival, Selby in November and so we thought it a good time to chat to lead vocalist and lead guitarist from the band Hannah!

Can you introduce us to Winter Storm and tell us a little about each member?

Winter storm formed in 2008 now, and our line up has changed over the years. We still search for a permanent drummer and in meanwhile use session drummer and backings.

Hannah is the front woman playing lead guitar and vocals, a main song writer, and started the band with Wayne. Hannah is a music teacher outside of the band and has previously been in local rock bands.

Wayne is the rhythm guitarist and another main song writer. Wayne is influenced by bands such as fear factory, metallica, and writes some stomping riffs.

Doomsday is the keyboardist, and outside of the band is a professional wrestler and is part of another musical project. His character portrayed is mysterious and contributes to the live show.

Kim is our newest member and has fitted in very well. He has previously worked in smaller local acts on bass guitar and came to winter storm with a love for symphonic music.

How would you describe your sound. How has it evolved over the years?

Winter Storm's sound is ever more heavy and progressive. Which is what we want. We started out as gothic metal but as we move forward we aim to become more progessive, writing heavier riffs and music.

What have been your main influences or styles?

Originally influenced by likes of Paradise Lost and Lacuna Coil, now our sound is more influenced by Arch Enemy, Nevermore, Iron Maiden, Soilwork.

You released Within The Frozen Design in 2013. Can you tell us more about the release?

The album was written over several years and the concept is about an individual who thinks he is designing his own universe but as the story unravels he realises he is not in control and spirals into madness. The artwork was themed and based around this courtesy of Matt Vickerstaff, peaceville. The reception has been very very good.

Do you have a favourite track from the album or one you particularly like to perform live?

Personally I like Dark Awakening still it really is a highlight for me. Fans have stated liking the ballad Afraid To Speak the most.

Are you planning to release another album in the near future?

Most definitely. We have ideas for riffs, but it will be a while in the works, as we want to bring something stronger than ever for our fans, and ideally tour more first in Europe.

Over the last few years, you’ve supported a huge number of other bands. Were there any stand-out moments? Which was your favourite?

The Birthday Massacre was great as fans were chanting... Alestorm was fun, audiences enjoyed us and the main band fired rubber arrows at us haha... Delain was good too, they are a great bunch of people and that was a home gig for us at our beloved JB's in Dudley which is now gone.

What do you enjoy most about playing live? Is there anywhere you would like to perform that you haven’t yet?

We love the atmosphere and bringing our sound to new audiences and in terms of where we want to tour across Europe namely playing Belgium again, then Holland,Germany, France, Poland...

You were recently the first band announced to play the final Valkyrian Festival in November. What are you most looking forward to about performing at this great festival?

We are very excited to perform and can't wait for it! Just to be back on stage bringing our sound to new audiences and catching some cool bands.

What does the future hold for Winter Storm?

More shows, more albums and we want to tour Europe, hint hint ;)

Follow the band on:
